ON THE LA STREET STYLE SCENE, SKATING IN THE DESERT AND THE TAILORING REVOLUTION
Meet Dominic Grizzelle – 25yo emerging star of the LA Street Style Fashion Scene thanks to his looks mashing up street style and tailored goods.
How did you first get into fashion and what brought you to sharing it online? How has your fashion content changed with your following growing?
I started loving fashion at a young age. I hated being the norm, so much that I would steal my sister's and mother's clothing just to recreate looks for school. Not much has changed with my content since my following increased and I think that’s what’s great about me - I understand my brand and identity and don’t need to fold for trends.
Has LA influenced your fashion sense and your freedom of experimenting with it?
In some ways, yes. The great thing about being from the west coast is people are a lot more laid back and open-minded than some other places in the States.
Where do you take inspiration from?
Wow, this question is always asked of me and I always have the same answers. Still til this day, I obsess over 90’s cartoons from Pepper Ann, Doug, and Hey Arnold. I will always draw inspiration from those cartoons but that’s just a visual representation of inspiration that I source. When we are talking as far as a mind state, I would say I'm inspired by women in general, but black women specifically. I was raised by a single black mother with 5 kids and I’ve seen for myself how much black women are survivors and resilient to what the world throws at them. It’s inspiring and honestly drives me every day.
Which countries do you think are the biggest in modelling peoples’ tastes? How do you see the future of fashion shaping in the next 5 years?
Hmmm. I think the US is still a huge influence when it comes to trends and in 5 years I see e-commerce taking over and not that many physical stores being open unless it’s a pop-up shop.
Do you think people’s perception of Tailoring is going through a revolution? What’s your favourite way of styling a suit?
Definitely! When I started blogging it was all about skinny suits and execution on the fit. Now I feel people are more open to oversized ill-fitting suits and I think it’s awesome because that’s always been my favourite silhouette when it comes to suits.
How did you come up with the idea of shooting in the Californian desert with a pro skater? Do you think the skateboard scene plays a part in shaping the fashion taste?
From my favourite actor Keanu Reeves. I think he’s so epic and talented and always loved how he carries himself hence the long scruffy hair. I think skateboarding could possibly play a huge roll in fashion - as seen with brands like Gosha Rubchinskiy.
